Linux Network Administrator's Guide

by Olaf Kirch, Terry Dawson

( Amazon )

Clues for setting up and maintaining a Linux network.

As this book came out of the Linux documentation project you can read it online for free. A while ago I downloaded the book to read, but for some reason I just never read it. So I paid for it, and now I'm reading it.

It's been useful for me to clear up some of my misunderstandings about networks, and in providing clues for getting my home network running. It covers the basics of routing, dial-up access, DNS, firewalls, masquerading, plus other topics which I'm less likely to use (NIS, NFS, IPX). For me the omissions are DHCP and Samba: chapters on those would have made the book essential, rather than just very useful.

My rating: Good
